6. Cross-country ski at Snow Farm (and spend the night)
It’s time to discover the best winter holidays in New Zealand: here is No. 6 of our 101 Reasons To Stop Dreaming About New Zealand And Go.
Snow Farm is a popular cross-country ski area that caters to families and even the four-legged members of the clan, all of whom can strike out across Wānaka’s deep snow on ski or snow shoe (or by foot and mountain bike in the summer months).
Unique accommodation options here are the three backcountry huts that can be found four and six kilometres (roughly one to three hours’ skiing/snowshoeing away) from the base area. Offering up a quintessential New Zealand alpine experience, the huts – Meadow, Bob Lee and Daisy Lee – sleep between six and 20 people, and all can be booked out for exclusive use.
There’s no electricity but there is a gas cooker, log burner, firewood and drinking water; you bring your own food, drink, sleeping bags, and a sense of camaraderie if sharing. Beds start at just $20 a night for adults, but be warned, the huts are hugely popular so you will need to book in advance.
