Though the hotel’s name refers to its location (NOrth of MADison Square Park), French designer Jacques Garcia has wittily woven the concept of travel (albeit up-market, old-world nomad) into the décor.
The 1903 Beaux-Arts building is crammed with rich colours, vintage rugs, polished boards, leather trunks and moody lighting.
Rooms, from Classic (read small) to the Suite Royale are equally as characterful, if a smidgeon more modest.
There’s an atmospheric library plus laptops and iPads on loan.
Super chef Daniel Humm has turned the Atrium and oak-furnished Parlour into New York foodie hotspots. Cocktail maestro Leo Robitschek steers the mahogany-panelled Bar.
