5. Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle, Chiang Rai, Thailand
Ranked #5 in our countdown of the 100 Best Hotels and Resorts in the World.
This northern Thailand camp is tucked into the treetops beside the Ruak River (that’s Burma on the other side).
Swish tents with crisp white bedding, hand-beaten copper tubs and leather bush chairs (plus air-con and wi-fi, of course) make for an upmarket jungle safari mood.
Outside, generous decks beckon with sofas, sun brollies and jungle river views. But the big thing here is the elephants (in more ways than one). Get up close on a sunrise trek or try a little mahout training.
After a day of riding elephant back, a Thai massage with fragrant herb-laced poultices works magic, as do the sundowners at the thatched-roof Burma Bar. Nong Yao restaurant serves refined Asian cuisine with the garden’s organic output.
Size 15 tents
Did you know The camp’s guests have helped adopt 10 elephants as part of the ‘Adopt a Gentle Giant’ scheme to save abandoned elephants.
